Too many new books are written in the present tense, and this annoys me to no end. Why? Because it’s like being shouted at for the entire length of the novel. The authors may as well be WRITING IN ALL CAPS for the duration. THIS STORY IS HAPPENING NOW! NOW! NOW! Ugh. The reader needs a break from the constant sense of urgency. Settled down. Let the reader absorb the chapter.
Present tense is fine for short pieces, but it’s exhausting to read a complete book written that way. I hope this writing trend gets wadded up and thrown in the wastepaper basket of history as soon as possible.
Why Present Tense is Annoying
